best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone

22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone

messaging 520x245 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone

  • We’ve known for sometime that SMS is becoming passe for many smartphone owners worldwide.
  • Sure, people still use it, but there are a slew of apps that go way beyond it, offering easy multimedia functions, group chats, video calls, gaming and much more. Beyond being SMS replacements, these apps are essentially ‘SMS+’ — to coin a phrase uttered to me recently by the founder of a messaging company.
  • But with so many apps out there it can be difficult to know exactly which one is best for you and your friends. To help you make that choice, we’ve waded through the densely populated mass of chat apps to pick out the best.

WhatsApp

  • WhatsApp needs little introduction since it is arguably the world’s most popular messaging app, with more than 300 million people using it each month. Simplicity is at the core of the service, to the point that even the least-tech-savvy of folks — such as mums, dads, grandmas and granddads — should be able to send text messages, photos and voice messages.
  • The service costs $0.99 for a one-year subscription — although it is free for the first year — and it supports a wide range of phones.
whatsapp 520x428 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone

Pros: Simple to use and popular enough that most of your friends may have it installed already.
Cons: While it isn’t expensive, it isn’t free, and it lacks the more sophisticated features which may appeal to some people.
Verdict: A must-have app.

GroupMe

  • As the name suggests, GroupMe is dedicated to group messaging. Users can share text-based chats, photos, videos and more across the service, which is available on a range of mobile platforms and also for the desktop.
  • GroupMe — which is actually owned by Skype, another app on our list, keeps things simple. Like WhatsApp, everything is text-based, there are no voice/video calls, which makes it well-suited to techies and non-techies alike.
groupme 520x443 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Easy to use and available across a range of platforms, including the Web.
Cons: There is no calling of any kind, and no content-related features.
Verdict: A solid app for all, GroupMe is much like a real-time Facebook Group designed specifically for mobile.
Download: iOS | Android | Windows Phone 8 | Desktop

Line

  • A messaging service born in Japan of a Korean Internet firm, Line offers a lot more than just the messaging basics. Users can send regular text messages, hold group chats, send photos/videos, make voice/video calls between fellow Line users and even play games with friends via the app.
  • Line is available for free, but users can spend money on virtual content like stickers, in-app purchases within games and sign-up to get messages from their favorite brands. Line supports more than 40 apps — including a nifty camera app — and there are plans to introduce music and shopping services soon.
line1 730x543 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Offers one of the most comprehensive selection of features, including video calls.
Cons: With so many features, there is the potential for users to get a little lost within the service.
Verdict: An excellent choice if you’re looking to do a lot more than merely replace SMS.

WeChat

This China-made service has been compared to Facebook, since, like Line, because of the way it mixes a range of social network-like features with messaging. WeChat signed up football Lionel Messi as it bids to become popular beyond simply China and Asia.
So what do you get from this free app? All the usual messaging features — multimedia/group chat/push-to-talk voice messages — alongside voice/video calls and opt-in accounts from brands. WeChat includes discovery features, which are becoming popular ways to meet new people (i.e. date), perhaps in a crowded bar.
wechat 520x443 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: A tonne of features, although its gaming service is not yet available outside of China.
Cons: Some stigma and concerns from being a Chinese service, while it is not yet widely used in the West.
Verdict: Another good option if you want more than just bare-bones messaging.
Download: iOS | Android | Windows Phone | BlackBerry | Others

Kakao Talk

  • Another free chat app from Asia — this time Korea — Kakao Talk is an interesting, multimedia-focused service, but it doesn’t have a large number of overseas-based users.
  • Kakao Talk offers the best selection of games on a messaging app, in our opinion, and includes all the usual chat features — group chats/multimedia — and supports voice and video calling between users. There are also other Kakao apps and clients for the PC and Mac, while Kakao has an Android launcher that is initially only available in Korea at this moment.
kakaotalk1 730x543 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Excellent selection and games, and useful calling and messaging features.
Cons: Most users are based in Korea, and the app is rather Asia-ified, which may not be to the liking of everyone.
Verdict: An interesting service but, unless you’re in Korea or an avid messaging fan, you’re not likely to need it.

MessageMe

  • A relatively new addition, having launched in early-2013, MessageMe is a slick (free) app that brings many of the features from Asian apps into a service designed to suit US consumer tastes.
  • MessageMe users can send each other text messages, images, doodles (drawing made within the app) and videos. They can also share their location, music from their device and stickers — which are both free and paid-for.
messageme 520x457 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Slick design which includes a range of features without bombarding users with options.
Cons: Lacks voice/video calling options, which some people appreciate in a ‘messaging’ app.
Verdict: Much like GroupMe, this is an interesting app that is providing most popular in the US, however it doesn’t have a massive user base.
Download: iOS | Android

Kik

  • Kik is one of the few messaging apps that doesn’t require you to provide your phone number. Instead you simply pick a username, provide an email address and go from there.
  • That easy sign-up process has made it popular across a range of devices — including iPods, tablets and other devices that don’t take SIM cards — and particularly popular among youngsters. Kik includes an interesting multimedia option — ‘Cards’ — which lets you download games and features, like a YouTube video player, to customize the app to your own preferences.
kik 520x443 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Doesn’t require a phone number and easily customizable.
Cons: There are no video or voice calling options.
Verdict: Particularly popular in North America and among youngsters, Kik is feature-rich and slick messaging app.
Download: iOS | Android | Windows Phone

Tango

  • Tango burst on the scene as a mobile video chat app, and that experience remains central to the service today — although it also includes voice calls, games and a desktop client.
  • Much like many of the Asian services, two Tango users can play Tango games together via the app, assuming that they both download the game. That’s on top of regular text messaging, group chat, video and photo sharing and other fairly standard features.
tango 520x457 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Excellent quality video calling across a range of platforms.
Cons: Tango is a more complicated service that WhatsApp and others, so it may not suit all users.
Verdict: A good choice for video calling, Tango has just started getting into games and it already includes titles from top game makers.
Download: iOS | Android | Desktop and others

Cubie

  • Taiwan-based Cubie is focused on drawing — users can make and send doodles to each other from inside the app — but it also includes a boat-load of other features.
  • Aside from the basics, the service is very multimedia-centric. All conversations include a dedicated photo gallery for images from chats with each of your friends, and there is voice calls, voice messages, location-sharing, a YouTube widget, stickers and more.
cubie 520x457 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: A very multimedia-focused app that can produce fun conversations between friends.
Cons: Very Asia-focused, which may not be to the liking of all users. The app doesn’t feature video calls.
Verdict: A unique messaging app that has proven popular in Asia, particularly among females.
Download: iOS | Android

Facebook Messenger

Facebook needs no introduction, its Messenger app is a standalone version of its Facebook Messaging service.
Messenger includes text chat, group chat, photo/video sharing, and even stickers. The chances are almost all of our friends are on Facebook, and, even if they don’t have the Messenger app, your messages will be sent to them as Facebook Messages.
facebookmessenger 520x457 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Everyone uses Facebook so there’s no question of having to convince friends to download the app.
Cons: Lacking video calls and gaming, but, moreover, it doesn’t feel like a unique chat app.
Verdict: Facebook Messenger is a solid app but, in a world where we spent enough time on Facebook as it is, many people prefer to turn to dedicate messaging apps instead. (For those that don’t, Messenger is ideal.)

Hike

  • Hike is a messaging focused app which allows users to share text messages, photos, videos, short voice messaging and chat in groups. It also includes a rather nifty ‘SMS out’ feature.
  • Currently available in Hike’s native India only, SMS-out lets users send chat messages to non-Hike users — useful in group chats. The app also includes stickers and location-sharing, while it is available in a range of European languages.

http://cdn3.tnwcdn.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2013/10/hike.jpg
Pros: Neatly designed with a range of messaging features.
Cons: SMS-out feature is India-only, and there are no calling features in the app.
Verdict: Useful app for those based in India, but its reach in Europe is growing as it becomes a feature-rich secondary option to other services.
Download: iOS | Android | Windows Phone 8 | BlackBerry 10

Google Hangouts

  • Google Hangouts includes instant text messaging and video and voice calling, and is available for iOS, Android and desktop (via the Web.)
  • Hangouts are multi-person group video chats that initially began on Google+. They are quite unlike other video chat services, because they allow multiple users on the same call for free. The text-based message service is basic, and essentially replaces Google Talk.
hangouts1 730x543 22 of the best mobile messaging apps to replace SMS on your smartphone
Pros: Available on numerous platforms. Multi-person video chat is free.
Cons: No support for SMS (yet) and text chat is basic.
Verdict: A really useful app for keeping in touch with friends, family and colleagues, which compliments other messaging-focused apps.

Android Apps - Make Your Dashboard More Dashing Than Ever

Get Rid of Those Pesky App Notifications with Notif

2 Android Apps to Make Your Dashboard More Dashing Than Ever

  • Are you an app junkie who can’t help himself whenever you see a good app trending on Google Play. Unfortunately, the cold hard truth is that you might not always need it or use it and end up dumping it from your app collection in favor of another novelty app that catches your fancy in the future.
  • Some of you just like knowing it’s silently lingering around in your phone just in case you need to use it in the future. This nonchalant download spree can make your screen cluttered with a million apps and sometimes, you forget where the app is and miss important notifications. Let’s face it, with every new app, there’s a swarm of unnecessary notifications that clutter your notification center and make navigation impossible.
  • There’s times when you’ve missed an important reminder, or a meeting or a deadline, or even a really important message from a friend through Viber, or Whatsapp because you didn’t finish scrolling through your notifications. If this is a somewhat accurate representation of your smartphone usage, then here’s one last app you need to get to resolve this issue once and for all.
  • Notif is an Android app that basically stands for Notification History. It can easily track which of your apps is pushing unwanted messages that are cluttering up your notification centre. Once the problem is detected, half the battle is already one. But that’s not all, the app does much more.

Android 4.4 KitKat Update Predictions: Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2

  • After the Android 4.4 KitKat update announcement, several companies threw their weight behind Google’s latest update. In the days since, we’ve seen others jump on board. One company that hasn’t announced anything is also one of the most popular: Samsung.

  • Last week, Google announced both the Nexus 5 and the Android 4.4 KitKat update. Android 4.4, an update that was originally announced back in September before the iPhone announcement, will be an incremental but useful update for all Android users.

  • Google confirmed that the update would roll out to its Nexus devices including the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 but beyond that the company remained silent. This likely came as a surprise to no one considering Google leaves those announcements to individual companies.

  • What was surprising though was that several companies immediately confirmed Android 4.4 KitKat updates. In the past, companies have offered up vague details and no semblance of timing. This time around, we saw something completely different.

  • HTC came right out of the gate and confirmed the update for the HTC One Google Edition within 15 days, the developer edition within 30 days and an update to the regular HTC One in the United States within 90 days. It also confirmed updates for the Droid DNA, HTC One Max and HTC One mini.

  • Motorola, a company that remained silent about its Android 4.3 Jelly Bean intentions, also offered specifics on the upgrade saying that the Moto X, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid mini would be getting the software.

  • Today, Sony confirmed Android 4.4 KitKat updates for a number of its Xperia devices and earlier this week, we discovered that at least one carrier is planning an LG G2 Android 4.4 update.

  • That said, there is still one company that remains silent about Android 4.4 KitKat. Samsung, the largest Android manufacturer in the world, still hasn’t said anything of note about Android 4.4. And sadly, we have only seen one rumor emerge.

  • Still, with history, rumors and some good old-fashioned guesswork, we can piece together some expectations in regard to the Samsung Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades and here is what we think.

Samsung Galaxy S5 -Conform Eye scanner

After Getting less selling on Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung release month of new galaxy phone.

  • I think this is rumors, but as per internet search, I collect little much information.
  • Samsung Galaxy S5 will launch on febuary-2014. They update huge features like Eye scanner and main thing is curve display.
  • Also they are changing the design.
  • Now the question arising is,
  1. Will Galaxy S5 need Ratina Display? If yes then how Samsung beat with Apple?
  2. Samsung Galaxy S5 has hitting problem like Samsung Galaxy S4?

Samsung may have pushed Galaxy S5 launch

Samsung may have pushed Galaxy S5 launch to January due to poor SGS4 sales

Compared to any other Android vendor, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 sales are great: 20 million units sold in the first 2 months. Many millions since then.
And yet, persistent rumors that S4 is a disappointment for Samsung, with sales seriously missing internal projections, refuse to die despite repeated management denials. And there are plenty of signs that Galaxy S4 demand has indeed declined since the heady days of late spring.  The most serious of which is the lack of updates on how many flagships Samsung sold since then.
It has now been 100 days, since they bragged about the first 20 million units shipped. If the 10 million units a month sales rate kept up, we should have passed a total of 50 million Galaxy S4s shipped mark sometime in late September, early October. And yet, we haven’t heard about Samsung passing the milestone of either 50 million, or 40 or  30 million SGS4s. And we most certainly would have, if they’ve had anything to be proud about.
Now Korean site  joseilbo.com reports that Samsung’s management is taking steps to accelerate things again, by pushing S4’s successor – Galaxy S5 launch date to January, with availability in February, from the scheduled March/April.
Samsung Galaxy S5 January
Earlier rumors suggested that Samsung Galaxy S5 will have Exynos 5430 64-bit CPU, 16 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, new design and fully metallic chassis. Which sounds pretty cool.
Though, with this kind of early rumors, you never know which parts got garbled and mixed up. For all I know,we might be talking about the first super-premium Samsung Galaxy F series device here, with S5 arriving right on schedule, next spring.

Samsung showcased foldable mobile prototypes to investors

samsung-display-foldisplay
  • Samsung’s Analyst Day in South Korea wasn’t only about the presentation from key Samsung executives. In fact, a report by Wall Street Journal claims, investors got a glimpse of the future at the closed door conference where reporters were banned from attending it and the investors, prohibited from taking any photographs.
  • The conference showcased some concept versions of foldable mobile phones with one analyst describing couple of devices on showcase.
  • According to Jae H. Lee, an analyst with Daiwa Securities, the first prototype was roughly the size of Galaxy S III and could be “folded in half from top to bottom.” Lee also described another device that transformed into a tablet device and was the “size of a lengthy wallet.”
  • Although we are few years away from seeing such displays in our regular lives, the future with flexible displays does sound exciting. Don’t you think?

Tizen-powered TV won’t come before Tizen smartphone

Tizen-powered TV won’t come before Tizen smartphone

 tizen-logo

  • Samsung and Intel may have chalked out a future for Tizen but a Tizen-powered TV will not be the one to be part of the first Tizen-powered devices. At a Smart TV Global Summit 2013 event, Kim Hyun-seok, head of Samsung Electronics’ visual display unit confirmed about the progress in the Tizen TV but won’t be until a smartphone makes the debut.
  • “We’ve seen much progress in the Tizen TV, but the phone will come first.”
  • Tizen devices have been more or less elusive and are often glimpsed only at the developer events hosted by Samsung. The first Tizen smartphone was expected this year but is now rumoured for a next year launch.
  • There’s a developer conference in South Korea next week and perhaps, it will be the place where Samsung will provide more concrete details on the future of the operating system and its devices, in addition to Tizen 3.0.

Samsung SM-G7102 leaks

Samsung SM-G7102 leaks: 5.2-inch 720p display, Android 4.3, dual SIM slots

logo-samsung-1

  • Back in mid-August, when the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear were still unannounced, four unknown Samsung models appeared in the wild but were unaccompanied by any meaningful details. Today, one of them – the SM-G7102, a 5.2-inch smartphone – has reared its face again, and this time a few of it specs have been confirmed.
  • The device seems to have dual SIM slots, which reduces the likelihood of it being launched in markets other than China and Asia. The User Agent Profile of the handset pegs its screen resolution at 720 x 1280, and it will launch with Android 4.3 out of the box, which could make it the first mid-range device to do so, after the Galaxy Note 3 and HTC’s One max.

Android 4.3 update now rolling out for Samsung Galaxy S III (GT-I9300)

There are quite a lot of changes and improvements in the new Android 4.3 firmware over Android 4.1.2. Samsung has completely changed the core UI to the one found on the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, even the setting app has been completely overhauled with a new tabbed interface. The bad news is that even though Samsung has changed the core UI elements, it’s still using the same old original Galaxy S III launcher and widgets. Also, Samsung hasn’t implemented Samsung Knox yet, but we may see it in future builds of Android 4.3. Samsung doesn’t provide an official change log for its updates but after testing a few internal builds and this official one, we can give you folks our own list of changes and improvements we have noticed.

CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS IN ANDROID 4.3 UPDATE
- GALAXY GEAR Support
- TRIM Support (Makes the device much faster)
- ANT+ Support
- Core UI elements updated to the ones on the Galaxy S4 (Galaxy S4′s theme all over)
- New Samsung Keyboard
- GPU drivers have been updated (Higher GPU benchmark scores)
- New Lockscreen: Multiple Widgets, improved ripple effect than Android 4.1.2, ability to change clock size and set a personal message
- New Screen modes (From S4): Adapt Display and Professional Photo
- Daydream
- Driving mode
- Actionable notifications
- Move-to-SD-card feature
- New Camera mode : Sound and Shot
- New Additions in Notification Centre
- Completely revamped Settings UI (Tabbed interface – Exactly like the Galaxy S4)
- Implementation of Voice controls (Let’s you control various parts of the phone using voice commands – Galaxy S4 feature)
- New Samsung Apps: Calculator, Clock, Contacts, Gallery, Music
- Full screen Samsung apps
- New S-Voice (from Galaxy S4)
- Found more? Tell us about them in the comments below!
The new software update is being rolled out in phases, so it may not yet be available in your country at the moment but don’t worry it will arrive very soon. If your device is carrier branded then it might take sometime as the update has to get improved by the carrier first and only then Samsung will make it available for your device. For now, the new software update is only available in Ireland.

How to Add Lock Screen Notifications on Android Without Root

  • Lock screen notifications are available on a number of different Android custom ROMs and OSes. Unfortunately, a lot of Android users don’t have default access to lock screen notifications.
  • That’s unfortunate, because lock screen notifications are really useful. You can instantly see important facts about your phone without going to the trouble of unlocking it. You can look at what song is playing, for example, and see basic details of your latest texts and calls.

How to add lock screen notifications

Step 1) Download and install DashClock Widget for free from the Google Play Store: This is one of the most popular apps available for Android today. Unfortunately, it’s only available to users of Android 4.2 and up. However, it does offer extensive customizability options.
Step 2) DashClock Widget is useful enough on its own: it adds an aesthetically pleasing clock to your Android homescreen. However, the real value of DashClock Widget comes with the new apps and extensions you can add.
Step 3) XDA Forum Member ‘umax’ created an extension called DashNotifier which replicates the NotificationListener service in Android 4.3. and gives it the ability to display more than just Gmail messages. You can download DashNotifier from the XDA Developers Forum here or directly from the Google Play Store here

Android 4.4 KitKat: What’s New In Simple way

  • It’s finally here! Google just released the new Nexus 5 smartphone with Android 4.4 KitKat to the Google Play Store, and has confirmed that most Nexus devices and Google Play edition smartphones will be updated in the coming weeks. After all the leaks, rumors, and speculation Google’s finally unveiled all of the details on the official Developer Blog.

  • While many tech enthusiasts will talk about smaller memory footprints and a new Android made for every device, we want to run down most of the headline features that are new with Android 4.4 KitKat, but do so in simple terms for the average consumer. What makes android 4.4 different from 4.3, which many don’t have, or even Android 4.2 Jelly Bean that’s on nearly 50% of Android devices today. So read on for a quick outline of what’s new with Android 4.4 KitKat in simple terms.

kk-home

Immersive Mode

  • Google starts by sharing details about the new immersive mode, which is essentially just a new way for Android to show virtually everything in fullscreen. No longer will we still have nav bars on the top and bottom. Whether you’re playing a game, watching a movie, or browsing the web, Android will hide everything but what you want to see. Making the experience more immersive no matter what you’re doing.
  • Another thing worth mentioning here is the navigation bar up top is now translucent, and can be customized. Meaning that application developers can tap into it and customize it as they need. This is where we’ll see part of the immersive mode. Apps will blend into the nav bar with the color of that specific application, giving users an in-depth feeling and a truly immersive fullscreen experience.

Android For Everyone

As many of you probably know that purchased a Motorola DROID a few years ago, or even some of HTC’s One devices from last year, not every Android device gets updated. This has been a part of the fragmentation and upgrades argument, well, since Android’s birth. The debate on what will get updated, and when, has always been an issue for carriers, manufacturers, and consumers. This will no longer be an issue with Android 4.4 KitKat and beyond. Google brought all its smarts together to make the most stable, fast, fluid, and more importantly, efficient version of a mobile OS to date.
“Android 4.4 is designed to run fast, smooth, and responsively on a much broader range of devices than ever before — including on millions of entry-level devices around the world that have as little as 512MB RAM.”

The new Google Nexus 5 and many top-tier smartphones all have 2GB of RAM, and even 3GB with the Galaxy Note 3, but not everyone needs or wants that powerful of a device. More importantly, not everyone can afford that type of device. As a result, Android 4.4 KitKat will be able to run smooth and stable on even the most budget-friendly and entry level smartphone. With Google claiming older devices with 512MB of RAM can run with ease.
Google streamlined every major component to improve memory usage and overall performance. In simple terms this means even the older single core smartphones from 2011 should technically be able to run Android 4.4 KitKat with ease. Whether or not Samsung, LG, HTC, Motorola and others put effort into older devices or not, is another question entirely. In the long run though, devices should stay up to date much longer in the future.

NFC

Previously in Android some devices with NFC used something called a secure element to securely hold important info, like credit card details, to use NFC and mobile wallet applications. As a result, many carriers didn’t like the idea and Google Wallet, and other loyalty and passport type applications never got off the ground. With Android 4.4 KitKat this won’t be a problem. Using an emulating system Google Wallet and many other NFC payment type systems can all be used safely and effectively across all devices with Android 4.4
Just like Passbook on iOS which stores credit cards, gift cards, boarding passes and more, Google will probably be announcing a new Google Wallet app using the new changes to Android 4.4 that will bring this full solution to Android. We’ve had it for a long time, but was limited, and now Google’s opened the door to unlimited possibilities with NFC.

The lens tube and LED assembly comes with a tiny pleather carrying pouch to keep it from getting grungy in your pocket or bag.

Android 4.4

Beautiful & Immersive

A more polished design, improved performance, and new features.

Just say “Ok Google”

You don’t need to touch the screen to get things done. When on your home screen* or in Google Now, just say “Ok Google” to launch voice search, send a text, get directions or even play a song.

A work of art

While listening to music on your device, or while projecting movies to Chromecast, you’ll see beautiful full-screen album and movie art when your device is locked. You can play, pause, or seek to a specific moment.

Immerse yourself

The book you're reading, the game you're playing, or the movie you're watching — now all of these take center stage with the new immersive mode, which automatically hides everything except what you really want to see. Just swipe the edge of the screen to bring back your status bar and navigation buttons.

Faster multitasking

Android 4.4 takes system performance to an all-time high by optimizing memory and improving your touchscreen so that it responds faster and more accurately than ever before. This means that you can listen to music while browsing the web, or race down the highway with the latest hit game, all without a hitch.

Smart & Simple

Google smarts improve every corner of the Android experience.

The future is calling

The new phone app automatically prioritizes your contacts based on the people you talk to the most. You can also search for nearby places and businesses, your contacts, or people in your Google Apps domain.

A smarter caller ID
